Employment Opportunities

Program Manager, LightSavers Canada
Canadian Urban Institute
Toronto, Ontario

The Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) is seeking candidates for the position of Program Manager, LightSavers Canada, to assist the Director to develop and manage a national Canadian market transformation initiative for LED street and parking area lighting and smart lighting controls. The foundation for this initiative was laid in 2008 by the Toronto Atmospheric Fund’s (TAF) LightSavers program, which established a network of cutting-edge performance trials in the Greater Toronto Area (see www.lightsavers.ca). The Climate Group, based in London, UK, then licensed the program internationally and partnered with 12 cities during 2009 - 2011, including London, New York, Sydney, Hong Kong, and Kolkata, to facilitate LED trials and scale-up projects now occurring successfully in most of these cities (see www.theclimategroup.org/lightsavers).

LightSavers is now embarking on its third phase, 2012 - 2015, with initial funding from the Natural Resources Canada. The aim is to facilitate and support significant scale-up of LED outdoor retrofits across Canada, through continued development of a national peer-to-peer network of lighting asset managers, interested utilities, and academic experts. This initiative will support market transformation activities that enable LED luminaires, augmented by smart adaptive dimming controls, to capture 15% - 25% of the outdoor Canadian market, resulting in significant reductions in electricity use and associated greenhouse gas emissions in some locales.

LightSavers Canada will focus especially on procurement and financial activities that address key barriers to scale-up, through workshops, webinars, social networking, and the 2nd national advanced lighting summit. The project is a partnership of CUI, TAF, and the University of Toronto’s Institute for Optical Sciences. Funds are also being sought to deliver customized solutions in Ontario and other provinces.

The Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) is Canada’s leading organization devoted to building dynamic, economically prosperous, and sustainable urban regions in Canada and abroad through partnerships and collaboration. The CUI is the secretariat for the LightSavers Canada consortium. The CUI fulfills its mission in Canada by providing a range of services and activities that include identification, evaluation and interpretation of technological applications and policy solutions to urban challenges; research, and dissemination of best practices with practical application in the municipal sector; convening of decision makers and thought leaders to advance successful urban public policy outcomes. A variety of sources funds CUI, including membership fees, grants, contracts, and contribution agreements with governments.

Deadline for applications: February 10, 2012.
