Urban Leadership Awards 2011

The Urban Leadership Awards (ULA) program is an annual initiative of the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) designed to recognize those who have made significant contributions to improving the quality of life in Canada’s cities and urban regions. ULA recipients define the very nature of “leadership” and can be organizations, groups or individuals who demonstrate a calling and a vision, tenacity, creativity, energy and drive. These characteristics combined with the ability to engage others, are what distinguish ULA recipients from the mainstream. The awards program is also a fundraiser for the Institute in support of our internship program, dedicated to providing undergraduate and graduate scholars with practical work experience. Transport Futures - Mobility Pricing Conference

Transporting people and goods presents society with several challenges: congestion, urban sprawl, smog, climate change, safety and health impacts -- to name a few. International research and experience have demonstrated that transport-based user fees can be set by government in order to modify driver behaviour, raise earmarked revenue for multi-modal infrastructure and assist in making bureaucracies more transparent and accountable to the public. Don’t miss this opportunity to examine the role user fees play in Ontario and how mobility pricing – parking fees, fuel taxes, transit fares and road pricing -- can drive transport efficiency, sustainability and social justice. We'll be assisted by these North American experts:

  • Dr. Lisa Schweitzer, School of Policy, Planning, & Development, University of Southern California
  • Dr. Keith Neuman, Environics Research Group Ltd.
  • Mr. Bruno Jacques, Transport Canada
  • Dr. David King, Graduate School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation, Columbia University
  • Dr. Richard von Haefen, Center for Environmental & Resource Economic Policy, North Carolina State University
  • Mr. Peter Mills, Perrin Thorau & Associates
  • Professor Harry Kitchen, Department of Economics, Trent University
  • Dr. Jeff Casello, School of Planning & Department of Civil Engineering, University of Waterloo
  • Mr. Ralph Bond, BA Group
  • Dr. Brendon Hemily, Hemily & Associates
