CUI completes Mississauga’s First Environmental Master Plan

Receives Unanimous Approval at Mississauga City Council

The CUI recently completed Mississauga’s first environmental master plan. Called the Living Green Master Plan (LGMP), it is a “greenprint” of 49 actions divided into actions that the City can take to Set an Example; Encourage Others; and Compel Others. The LGMP includes a Decision Support Process that was developed to help staff work together to understand the environmental impact of decisions and actions and a section on measuring environmental performance by collecting baseline data and setting targets. The plan was approved unanimously by Mississauga City Council on January 18, 2012.

The LGMP identifies priority actions to meet the environmental objectives of Mississauga’s Strategic Plan, Official Plan and other corporate plans. Priorities of the plan include building on the City’s environmental success through investment in public transit and alternative forms of transportation, green development standards, creating an environment office, raising public awareness through environmental education, collecting baseline data to measure success, understanding Mississauga’s energy future, and building partnerships and collaborations with the community, the region and the province.

The development of the plan involved extensive consultation with key stakeholders, staff and the public.  Over 40 organizations and 300 people were engaged in several rounds of staff and stakeholder workshops and over 50 interviews.
